Media & Communications Manager
Melbourne Storm is an Australian professional rugby league club playing in the National Rugby League (NRL) competition. We are the only NRL team based in Victoria and have experienced substantial growth and success in our short history.
About the role
We are searching for a focussed and talented individual, who brings strong attention to detail, whilst being able to work at pace, to join our dedicated team.
Reporting to the Head of Digital and Content, this role holds responsibility for the Club’s media and communications activity and requirement with a focus on building the club’s brand and awareness, particularly in the Melbourne and emerging markets.
The role will work closely with a number of key internal stakeholders including the General Manager Football, players, Head Coach, High Performance Staff, and Chief Executive Officer, as well as the Sponsorship, Marketing, Digital and Data teams, to ensure timely and impactful communications are delivered. In addition, this role will need to work effectively with media and NRL stakeholders to manage requests and interviews with players and other key personnel.
The successful applicant will need to be naturally collaborative, proactive, organised and creative, with the ability to deal with a variety of people and priorities.
Due to the nature of the role the successful applicant must be available to work at Storm home games at AAMI Park throughout the season and will need to undertake travel with the team on away games to support broadcast and media requirements for both the Club and the NRL. In addition, this role may be required to assist at club functions and events as needed.
This role will be responsible for a number of key deliverables across communications, content and mediaincluding, but not limited to:
• Writing, preparing and issuing Club related media releases, alerts, updates and statements with a football or commercial focus as required.
• Developing key messages and talking points for talent prior to media interviews/press conferences to assist with professional development and alignment with Club objectives.
• Identifying key club stories and working with digital team to coordinate, produce and amplify these projects on both owned channels and with external outlets.
• Working to ensure maximum exposure is gained for club campaigns undertaken by commercial business units i.e. membership campaigns, community / grassroots activities etc.
• Managing match day media and broadcast requirements.
• Managing Club press conferences as required working closely with the digital team to ensure content is captured and shared across relevant channels and distributed to outlets as required.
• Developing, managing and maintaining relationships with players, coaches and other internal stakeholders both in football and commercial.
• Experience with content production (video and social media) will be highly favoured.
The successful candidate will possess:
• Tertiary qualifications in Media, PR, Journalism, Communications or a similar degree.
• Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in a similar role, ideally in a sporting environment.
• Demonstrated success in the execution of sport media strategies and campaigns.
• Experience with content production (video and social media) will be highly favoured.
• Rugby League and NRL knowledge is highly desirable.
• High level organisational skills and an understanding of processes required to facilitate best media practices.
• Ability to work autonomously and within a team.
• Exceptional written and verbal communications skills.
• Excellent relationship building and influencing skills.
