After two months back at training, Christian Welch remains confident for return to the NRL stage in Round 1.
Following eight months away from the rugby league grind, and twelve months away from full squad training, the 28-year-old is finally at the tail end of his recovery after his season-ending Achilles injury in Round 1 of 2022.
"I'm working my way back now from the Achilles,” Welch shared.
I should be good for Round 1 and about to integrate back into kind of full team stuff.
Throughout his rehabilitation, Welch was candid about the mental and physical toll a significant injury can take on a professional athlete. Having halted his life and career for almost year, the forward is thrilled to be back amongst his team.
“It's been a long ride as well since the injury in Round 1, so it's been a really disappointing year,” the prop admitted.
“But I’m really excited with the squad we’ve got.”
Fellow teammate Ryan Papenhuyzen also suffered a major injury in 2022, fracturing his kneecap in Round 18. The fullback has since taken his rehabilitation journey to the USA, working with renowned reconditioning specialist Bill Knowles.

While exciting, Welch understands the difficulties the young gun has faced away from footy and shares his optimism of a refreshed Papenhuyzen upon return.
“Hopefully we’ll get him back and we'll start seeing a bit more progress,” the Origin star said.
“It's been a really difficult injury for Old Pappy, it's obviously mental and physical, so hopefully this will really recharge him on both fronts.”
