For a brief time as a teenager, Melbourne Storm winger Will Warbrick wondered if he had a future in the AFL with St Kilda.
The 25-year-old New Zealand native is now an Olympic silver medallist and an impressive newcomer with the Storm after switching from rugby sevens to the NRL after the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
But in his teens, he spent a year playing Australian rules and even played for New Zealand’s under-18 side.
Warbrick talks down his AFL talents, but he was good enough to play in the inaugural season of the AFL New Zealand competition with Western Crows and win the first weekly rising star award.
